The need for volunteers in today’s society is ever increasing. Organizations rely on dedicated volunteers to survive and the number of volunteers willing to give freely of their time is decreasing; economics alone demand that both husband and wife work in order to keep their head above water. It’s understandable when people say they ‘just don’t have the time’.
The Fire Service in British Columbia, for that matter, throughout North America relies on volunteers to ensure communities are safe. These volunteers dedicate themselves to ensure the safety of the people in their communities. Firefighter volunteers truly do make many sacrifices in an effort to keep abreast of firefighting knowledge and emergency medical responder techniques.
All fire departments have been going through constant change each year. There are many advances in fire fighting technology and the Kaslo Fire Department has been acquiring both this technology and the tools to respond and handle emergencies in the safest manner possible.
Firefighter safety is the highest priority when responding to all alarms; this begins before any apparatus leaves the hall. It starts with standard operating guidelines to assist firefighters with initial assessment, using personal protective equipment, and responding to the call. Once at the incident firefighters must constantly be aware of changes to their surroundings and react to the ever present dangers of an emergency scene. Emergency response is a dynamic process, and until it is completely over and personnel and equipment are back at the station there are many potential dangers. Much of the training Firefighters focus on is to ensure all dangers are minimized and their work is carried out as safely as possible.
Volunteer firefighters are commited and dedicated people, who continually strive to protect and maintain a safe community.
If you would like to make a difference in the community, apply to the Kaslo Volunteer Fire Department.
